All Aboard The Fear Train

All Aboard The Fear Train

Mike Huckabee is a bald-faced liar. Unlike other presidential candidates, Huckabee seems intelligent; like he’d be actually capable of writing something well if it weren’t for his stupid ideology. I don’t know what it is, but some part of me is screaming that Huckabee knows himself to be a liar. And I can think of few things more aggravating.

Canada, for those of you who didn’t know, has pledged to help the international community — newly elected Prime Minister Pierre Justin Trudeau has announced the Liberal governments’ intentions of ushering in 25,000 Syrian refugees by years’ end (in one and one quarter months).

As such, my Facebook feed has burst asunder with arm-chair statesmen, and… well… closet racists.

I won’t deny that I’m worried, or that the attacks in Paris and Lebanon (and now Mali) haven’t struck a chord within me, and I also won’t deny that my first thought on Mr. Trudeau’s plan for relocation was, “Hey, maybe… maybe not this time.”

But, like the rational human I claim to be, I did research, and came to the conclusion that by barring Syrian’s from our home, we’re only helping ISIS and hurting ourselves. I also learned that we have little to be afraid of.

However, facts haven’t stopped said arm-chair statesmen from posting shitty memes and scaremongering all up and down my news feed. And frankly, I’m tired of the misinformation.

“Remember that Muslim who killed Marines in Chattanooga? He was a refugee.”

He wasn’t, but that’s another article completely. It’s bologna like that which makes me question democracy; should these people, the ones who post this shit without even thinking to see if it’s substantiated, be allowed to vote? Of course, but it’s a more worrying thought than any would-be terrorist—seeing as these ignoramuses will be present a couple times a decade for sure.

But it gets worse because it’s not only people on my Facebook that are buying into the propaganda. There are actual elected officials who believe the lies and are propagating them. One of them in particular, the subject of this here article, is Huckabee.

He recently posted an article on Fox News (surprise) that was as egregious, if not more, than any stupid meme ever posted on Facebook. Mike said:

“Sady, the Obama administration is moving full-steam-ahead with its idealistic and outright dangerous Syrian refugee relocation plan, which will settle more than 10,000 unchecked, unscreened foreigners across American towns.”

Pay attention to the boldface. In eastern Canada we would refer to this statement as a “fuckin’ lie.”

I’m not sure where Huckabee gets his information, but I know Canada’s relocation plan, and I know the refugee entry process.

All Syrian refugees have to apply for refugee status from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). Their application is reviewed by the commission, and if they are accepted, they are screened by the UNHCR.

So, even if the U.S. was unwilling or unable to screen these refugees, the claim that these 10,000 refugees will enter the United States “unchecked and unscreened,” is a “fuckin’ lie.”

Naturally, he doesn’t stop there.

“The FBI director has explicitly stated that we cannot conduct background checks on these people.”

Another blatant lie. That’s not what he said.

It seems to me that people like Huckabee are only willing to view the information that already supports there terrified, xenophobic agenda. If they would look at the numbers, they’d learn that the majority of refugees are children—in Canada, the Liberal government has prioritized female-headed households and children for entry.

They would also find the entry process to be rigorous—since they’re unwilling to do research, hopefully this infographic will make the learning process more fun.

But Huckabee said one thing I can agree with.

“The Syrian refugee crisis must not be taken lightly.”

It shouldn’t. Millions of people flee from our most prevalent enemy, and we should do everything in our power to help. Is the threat of terrorism present? Of course it is, but the likelihood is infinitesimally small.

Scaremongering, and misinformation isn’t helping any one. It’s making our countries dumber, and hurting millions of desperate people.

Stop doing it.

Take Action!
