Listen To: ‘Grindmother’ by Corrupt Leaders

Grind, or grindcore, is usually defined as “an extreme genre of music that originated in the early to mid-1980s,” and “draws inspiration from some of the most abrasive-sounding music genres – including extreme metal (mainly thrash and death metal), hardcore punk, crust punk, industrial rock and noise rock. Grindcore is characterized by a noise-filled sound that uses heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars, grinding overdriven bass, high speed tempo, blast beats, and vocals which consist of growls and high-pitched shrieks.” Another important feature of the genre is the so-called microsong – a track that is shorter than a minute. In other words, it is a bad-ass, ultimately aggressive music genre that is usually performed by men who demonstrate their manly powers through music. A perfect surrounding for a 67-year-old woman.

What? You haven’t heard of Grindmother? How about the band called Corrupt Leaders? Well, they made quite a splash at the beginning of the year, due to the fact that one of the performers was a 67-year-old woman, the mother of the lead singer. So, Grindmother is the title of the album released by the grindcore band Corrupt Leaders and it features the howls and screams of the lead singer’s 67-year-old mother. Now there’s a thing you didn’t really expect, an excellent marketing move that brought them to the attention of Noisey, Smash, OC Weekly and other influential news sites and internet portals. And let me tell you, this woman is truly amazing, as many have noted. She even decided to start her own project called the Grindmother:

Now, besides the fact that she is so fascinating — because no one actually ever thinks that an “old” woman can successfully do grindcore — the appearance of Grindmother points to a very important political problem. Namely it touches on the question of ageism that we so eagerly try to avoid, since, let’s face it, she did’t become famous (or almost-famous) because she is so darn good — which she is, no doubt about it — but because we are so freakin’ fascinated with the fact that an “old” woman can yell and scream and howl and, essentially, do everything we normally expect from a young(ish) man. Another “ism” rears its ugly head here and that is good ol’ sexism. And Grindmother is, also, an excellent example of how the society’s bigotry can be exploited.

Now, Grindmother by Corrupt Leaders is a brilliant less-than-four-minutes long EP that has everything a great grindcore EP should have. RainForest, son of Grindmother (vocals), Nick (guitar), Steve (bass) Tyson (drums) are seriously kicking some ass with what they do, making concise and high quality music. Joined by Grindmother, they are truly exceptional, and her vocal abilities are truly magnificent (and I do’t mean truly magnificent “for an old lady”) in every way.

I applaud them for helping Grindmother discover her true self, because grindcore is her true calling! You can listen to Grindmother below:
