This Is What Happens When You Lose Public Trust

There is no question that the police are out of control. The killing of unarmed, mostly African American, citizens has been gaining increasing publicity. Dashboard and body camera video has captured deplorable police behavior. In many cases the official police report is directly contradicted by the video evidence. Further, if not for the video evidence, the police report would go unchallenged. So the public has or is losing trust in the police. From the public’s perspective, the police have declared war on the citizens.

So is anyone surprised when a cop is shot in Houston simply because he is a cop? I am not. This is the natural result of the police attacking the citizens. When Harris County DA Devon Anderson says “There are a few bad apples in every profession. That does not mean there should be open warfare declared on law enforcement.” The correct response is “the citizens didn’t start this war – the police did. The citizens are now finally fighting back.” Further, the “few bad apples” are protected by the pervasive blue wall of silence, and to paraphrase a former president, “if you harbor a bad cop you are a bad cop.” And when Sheriff Hickman says, “At any point when the rhetoric ramps up to the point where calculated, coldblooded, assassinations of police officers happens, the rhetoric has gotten out of control.” Well, sheriff, perhaps if the police had not spent decades abusing a large segment of the population with no repercussions and intimidating citizens all while assuming they are above the law, then maybe we would not be in this situation. But since the police have been out of control for years, the trust is gone and this is the situation we are in.

Take Action!
