Not Even Trying To Hide His Contempt

Not Even Trying To Hide His Contempt

I’m just here so I won’t get fined.” I love it. And I love the follow up the next day even more, “You know why I’m here.” In case you do not know what these quotes are from, they are the way that Marshawn Lynch answered every question in Tuesdays mandatory “Media Day” and on Wednesday’s mandatory press availability. For the record, on Tuesday, he stayed at his station for 4 minutes and 51 seconds. That is a full hour less than his teammates. I am not sure how long the Wednesday press availability lasted but I am sure it was short.

The reason I love it is Lynch isn’t even pretending to take the mandatory press interactions seriously. He hates talking to the media and has been fined many times for ducking it. So now, rather than continue to pay the fines, he has taken another approach. He attends the mandatory sessions and just says the same thing over and over again in answer to every question. Brilliant. I love it. Nothing better.

Seriously, I think it is great. It is not the normal coach/QB gibberish that says nothing while trying to sound like they are saying something. How many times can we hear variations on “We are just trying to take it one game at a time,” “We have a lot of respect for [insert next opponent here],” “I just try to go out there and do my job,” etc. I mean that is vacuous crap that they are trying to dress up as real statements. Marshawn is at least not even trying to dress it up. He is saying “fuck you” to the NFL in a way that is not getting him in trouble.

Take Action!
