THIS YEARS REOLUTION — THE SAME AS LAST YEARS — ANNOY THE SHIT OUT OF MATT HEALEY

The Snap:

It is approaching the end of the year. Now is the time that people who are not me tend to start thinking about new year resolutions. The most common resolution is to annoy me at the gym.

The Download:

Last year I wrote about the train wreck that is January at the gym. There is a flood of new people all who think this year is going to be the year. All of whom are wrong and will have stopped going by the middle of February. However in the 6 weeks it takes them to realize that they are not really going to get in shape because it is hard and requires you live with being tired, working out when what you really want to do is go home and watch TV, and wake up with sore stiff muscles. All of these things are not pleasant and so you will quit just like you have done every other year. This year the irritation started early. At the gym on Sunday were a few early “New Years.” One struggling to figure out how to make the treadmill work, and a couple who were trying to remember how to work some equipment.

Let me clarify — if you did not do anything in 2013 you will not do anything in 2014. It takes effort. This was a banner year for me from a workout perspective. As of this post, I managed to workout or do something active 255 days. The hike counts. A day a skiing counts. And going to the gym counts. So this year the goal has to advance. 2014 the goal is tied to Fitbit. For Christmas this year my wife got me a Fitbit. So 2014 the goal is to achieve 30 min a day of “very active minutes” and 5 miles of walking or running every day. This will be more difficult, but should be doable.

Take Action!
