YELLOW OSTRICH RELEASE NEW SINGLE FROM UPCOMING ‘COSMOS’ ALBUM

The Snap:

Brooklyn-based indie group Yellow Ostrich have released “Shades,” the first single to appear from the band’s upcoming album, Cosmos, due out February 25th. Last year’s Ghost EP was a very smooth and poppy collection of six songs — something completely different than the band’s latest single. Bringing gnarly guitar licks and a much rockier vibe, Yellow Ostrich look to return to the lo-fi style of their previous full-length albums.

The Download:

With a wildly-screeching guitar and a cymbal-obsessed drum pattern, Yellow Ostrich goes completely HAM in ‘Shades’. It’s nothing like the slower, more percussive Ghost EP, and that doesn’t appear to be a bad thing so far.

Shades doesn’t sound forced or fake, and it doesn’t give the impression that Yellow Ostrich is trying to be something they’re not. If anything, this is the band that they truly are. Small glimpses of the more rock-oriented style occasionally broke through on 2012’s Strange Land LP, and it’s good to see the group going back to their former ways.

I wasn’t overly impressed with Ghost — it stifled the groups sound and attempted to join a ‘trendier’ genre — and I don’t think I’ve listened to it since its release. However, Strange Land and Mistress are both very entertaining albums, and it looks like Cosmos may be joining that category come February.

Listen to “Shades” below.

Take Action!
