SHOVELS & ROPE: A DUO THAT DELIVERS

The Snap:

Charleston-based band Shovels & Rope is kicking off their USA (+ European) tour, which is slated to run through March 2014. The husband and wife duo has been compared to June Carter and Johnny Cash, signifying that they’re on the brink of something big. That, or they already are something big… And the rest of the world is just catching on.

The Download:

Couples music stuff can fall flat. The listener either feels like a third wheel or simply acknowledges that the whole thing feels a little forced. That was cynical. But I also think it can be true. Sometimes, people who love each other simply aren’t meant to work together…. Especially in the music industry.

But Shovels & Rope is a beautiful exception. Comprised of Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, the band epitomizes that rich, timeless Southern drawl that feels like it was lost decades ago.

Shovels & Rope released O’ Be Joyful back in 2012 and began quietly taking smaller venues by storm. It wasn’t until their epic appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman (seriously — watch that) that the band grew a wider fan base. Despite their burgeoning fame, the due maintains its homestyle, rich roots. If you need me to spell it out for you, I am in love with them both.

The magical Shovels & Rope is currently cruising around the U.S. (with a brief pit stop in Europe, naturally) — and you’d really be doing yourself a disservice if you missed them. It always feels kind of special when you uncover a band that sounds as kickass live as they do in the studio… And this is such a group.

If you’ve never listened to this duo before, then take this quick listening tutorial to get caught up:

— Tiny Desk Concert presents live renditions of “Carnival,” “Bad Luck” and “Birmingham”

— “Birmingham” (which you can watch below) is their most popular piece – and with good reason

— “Lay Low” is another beaut

— “Gasoline” is fueled by a high-energy vocals and low-key instrumentals

— A documentary that I. Want. To. See. So. Badly. is also in the works – you can get the scoop via Kickstarter

Take Action!
