ARE THE RATIONAL BUSINESS REPUBLICANS STARTING TO TAKE BACK THE PARTY FROM THE WACKO BIRDS?

The Snap:

Traditionally the Republicans have been the party of big business. They were supported by large corporations and they advocated policies that generally favored business. They were the supply side economists. That has changed over the past few years and they are now the evangelical christian party of god.

The Download:

I think that business is now waking up to the fact that the party they have supported for years is now no longer under their control. This came to light on Wed when several trade organizations openly discussed entering into primary battles with lawmakers that had supported the shutdown. This is a major break from the traditional approach of staying out of primary battles. Generally the business community would tolerate some of the social conservatives because they supported their other objectives. But the strong anti-establishment zeal of the current crop of evangelical christian party of god members is making it difficult for business to operate.

I think in the long run this will be very positive for the current system. As I mentioned a few days ago, for the U.S. system of government to function we need two responsible parties. We currently have one and a group of crazies. The problem is that up until now the only thing that the evangelicals feared was a primary challenge from the right. This drove the party further and further right. It encouraged reckless behavior like we have seen over the past 11 days. Further it was getting worse as polls indicated that the public was generally holding the evangelicals more to blame than Obama and the Democrats. This would have threatened the few remaining moderates like Charlie Dent who were at risk of losing their seats to challenges from the Democrats.

But with this latest development the course has a chance of reversing. If business begins to threaten to support challengers from the center, then a counter balance will be introduced to the Tea Party. Representatives will need to think not only about not being outflanked to the right, but also about a challenge from the center if they move too far right.

Take Action!
