GETTING THE OPTICS RIGHT IS A GOOD FIRST STEP

GETTING THE OPTICS RIGHT IS A GOOD FIRST STEP

The Snap:

Last week, the annual Republican National Committee summer meetings were held in Boston, under the theme “Making It Happen.” Generally these meetings are for insiders, but some portions of the meetings become public, so getting the right feel is important.

The Download:

I wanted this post to a very snarky post about a party that is so out of touch that they didn’t even get the optics of the situation right. Clearly the meetings started out that way, with the first key note speaker being Newt Gingrich. He explained to the audience how a smartphone works and talked about the need to reach out to voters who do not traditionally vote evangelical christian party of god. So it was off to a great start for a mocking “look how out of touch they are” post. The next event was the “RNC Rising Stars Townhall“. As I waited for Internet, which apparently according to Newt I can now get on my phone (now if I only could get football on my phone, then my life would be complete), I hoped that the rising stars would all be middle aged white men.

The problem was that the rising stars were not all white men. The list was:

Karin Agness, Founder and President of the Network of enlightened Women
Scott G. Erickson, Heritage Foundation Writer and San Jose Police Officer
Marilinda Garcia, New Hampshire State Representative
T.W. Shannon, Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives

So it looks like they got the optics right, which is a big first step. I hope that they can follow this up with some substantive changes to policy, specifically with regard to social issues. Only time will tell, but at least this is a good first step.

Take Action!
