The Snap:

John Mayer is at it again. The singer/songwriter is slated to release his sixth studio album on 20 August, promising to return to his “Americana-inspired” folksy roots. You can preorder Paradise Valley via iTunes. Incidentally, the album already has a 4.5-star rating from 797 customer reviewers (who haven’t heard the album in its entirety yet….), so it looks like I’m in the minority here.

Mayer is also regaling North America with the Born and Raised World Tour, and you can see if he’s performing near you here.

The Download:

I’m bored of John Mayer. I’m bored of his whispery, whiney voice, of his annoying songs that seem to permeate the radio. I’m sick of him describing himself as a sex god, of him regaling us with stories of his porn addictions as though he deserves an award for it all. I’m flabbergasted that he thinks he can casually drop the N-word in an interview, or talk about his penis for so long that I actually start to forget what it is he does for a living.

And yet, he’s back again.

Get a sampling of Paradise Valley with a free stream via iTunes. “Who You Love,” a collaboration between Mayer and Katy Perry, is one track that has has grabbed critics’ attention. I thought it was a bit of a snoozer, but you should find out for yourself. I thought that “On the Way Home” was sort of nice, but nothing to write home about. “Wildfire” was fun, too.

I really shouldn’t judge any artist on anything but the music that they produce — it shouldn’t matter if they’re a pretentious asshole, so long as as they make some good songs. But even when I strip all of this away, and just judge the guy on his music…. It just rubs me the wrong way. Is it just me?

Take Action!
