HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE?

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE?

The Snap:

How do you chose an employer? I am wondering this because as the hike begins to come to an end, I will in all likelyhood be re-entering the workforce. Right now I am looking at a few different options. Some are stronger than others.

When you first get out of school the evaluation process is easy. Generally, you tend to take the only job you are offered. If you are luckey enough to have multiple offers, then you often decide based on location or money. However, as you get more senior in your career, you have more options. It is not that money and location are not important, it is just that since you are more expereinced you have more options and more of an understanding of what you want to do with the precious time you rent to your employer.

This greater freedom presents some challanges. Like all things there are tradeoffs. Do you go with a smaller firm where you could have more of an immediate impact and greater freedom to roam in what you do, or do you go for a larger firm where you have a more defined role and more support from a larger team? Do you take a higher risk opportunity for the chance of greater upside, or a more conservatve option with a lower downside? What are the people you are going to be working with like? Do you fit in from a cultural perspective? Do you believe in the overall mission or values of the company? These are all questions that you need to consider. The problem is that you can not really understand or get good answers until you work there. You can get a feel during the interview process, but to trully grok the environment, you have to live it. And you cannot do that until you have made a choice.

Take Action!
