The Snap:

Portland duo Quasi have announced their first album in over three years – Mole City, due out October 1st. The album features 24 tracks and will be available as a double LP in both vinyl and CD formats. The first single, You can stay but you got to go, has been released into the wild, and is staggeringly good. Fans that pre-order Mole City will also receive a cover of the bands three favorite songs on CD-r.

The Download:

2013 marks the group’s 20th anniversary, and there’s no better way to celebrate it than with a new double LP with tons of added perks. Depending on the package you prefer, Mole City is available to be bundled with t-shirts, fanzines, Coke bottle clear vinyl pressings, original recordings, and even a personalized voicemail from the band. Pretty awesome.

While the group has continuously put out great tracks like I never want to see you againSeven years gone, and All the same, they have yet to reach the audience they deserve. Quasi has produced some really well done experimental-indie tunes over the years, and the duo has evolved from a gritty, dirty, indie-grunge band in the 90’s, to a bit softer, anti-war protesting group in the 2000’s. And now they’re a near-perfect combination of both.

The new single, You can stay but you got to go, contains an extremely fuzzy and distorted guitar – similar to something you would expect from The White Stripes – that growls through a good chunk of the track. The vocals of frontman Sam Coomes pull the song into a perfect indie-to-rock balance, which is not something that’s easy to find these days.

Don’t be surprised if Mole City ends up being one of the best albums of 2013 in the genre.
