WHEN WILL MODERN VAMPIRES OF THE CITY BE AVAILABLE ON SPOTIFY?

The Snap:

Vampire Weekend’s new album, Modern Vampires of the City, was released on May 13th. Thus, fans who have purchased the album from iTunes, Amazon or other music stores have been able to enjoy the entire release for about a week now. To the dismay of many, however, the album has not been made available for streaming via subscription-based music services such as Spotify.

But those diehard fans of Vampire Weekend who also prefer subscribing to music don’t need to rush out and buy the album in a panic just yet (not that I would know anything about that). Fortunately, the band does not plan to block their most recent work from subscription services indefinitely.

The Download:

During a recent Reddit AMA session, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Kroenig explained that while the band’s label, XL Recordings, has temporarily blocked Modern Vampires of the City from Spotify (and competing services such as Rdio), the delay will be short-lived.

Kroenig noted, “i’m down with spotify. i don’t know all the financial details but generally it’s a great resource. i should probably ‘do some research.’ our label decided to wait a couple weeks before putting MVOTC up there. struck as reasonable.”

Two weeks is reasonable for everyone involved. XL Recordings and Vampire Weekend get a bit of extra higher-margin sales by holding out on Spotify for a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, fans will get access to all of Vampire Weekend’s music via their chosen acquisition model (subscription or purchase). A delayed release on Spotify may be imperfect, but it beats the type of indefinite block that the Black Keys, by contrast, have taken with their last album, El Camino (which I won’t even bother linking to — those selfish bastards).

So breathe easy, Spotify users, you’ve only got about a week left to wait before you can stream Modern Vampires of the City in its entirety (assuming Kroenig’s Reddit AMA response is accurate). Meanwhile, enjoy the great rendition of “Unbelievers” — which IMO may just be the best song on the new album — in the video below.

Take Action!
