THE MILK CARTON KIDS WILL NOT BORE YOU

The Snap:

The Milk Carton Kids released their second album, The Ash & Clay, on  26 March. This California-based duo exudes Simon & Garfunkel-esque style, filling each of their songs with a modern folk edge that has garnered them overwhelmingly positive acclaim from critics all over the music industry’s spectrum.

The group is currently on tour throughout the USA. In July, The Milk Carton Kids will be joining Josh Ritter on his summer tour. Their alignment with Ritter suggests the prominent place that they will hold in the contemporary folk genre.

The Download:

The Milk Carton Kids seem to live by the mantra that you can never have too much of a good thing. Back in 1967, Simon & Garfunkel enchanted the world with their soundtrack for The Graduate, a compilation of songs that is as beloved today as it was forty years ago. The Milk Carton Kids have the same vibe. Their songs have a timelessness that suggests that they will be appreciated by fans for years to come.

Though I have a sneaking suspicion that some people might vehemently disagree with me, I think that we’re lucky to live in an era that has produced a ton of great musicians. But every once in a while, I can’t help but wonder: Which ones will actually stick? Who will be our Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, or Grateful Dead? While I can’t predict the future, I certainly think that the Milk Carton Kids seem to be the kind of band that will never lose their appeal (sort of like Justin Beiber or One Direction, right?).

The band’s got humble roots. Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan joined up after being plagued by unsuccessful careers as solo musicians. Since founding The Milk Carton Kids, they have wowed audiences – and for good reason. They rock out on vintage guitars, they give their albums away for free, and they play some seriously awesome music. What’s not to love?

When introducing your ears and eyes to the Milk Carton Kids, be sure to check out the following:

Tiny Desk Concert – What an awesome way to “get” these guys. They’re kooky, they’re fun to watch, and they play exquisite songs.

Daytrotter Session – An oldie but a goodie. It’s also a fun opportunity to see how thee band has evolved in the past two years – while underscoring the raw talent that these guys have had from the start.

“Honey Honey” on Conan – Okay, maybe I included this because of my deep love for Conan. But it also showcases what awesome  performers Pattengale and Ryan are.

“The Ash & Clay” music video – A beautiful song and a beautifully filmed video. While we’re on the subject of music videos, check out “Honey Honey”  (and Amanda Seyfried) and “Snake Eyes.”

I would highly recommend that you download the free albums and buy The Ash & Clay. You’re going to get a lot of mileage out of all of them.

Take Action!
