ARE YOU KEEPING UP WITH MGMT?

The Snap:

In honor of Record Store Day, MGMT gave everyone a treat with the release of “Alien Days.” Taken from their highly anticipated upcoming album MGMT, the band gives us a teaser of their evolving sound. The song also sparks some excitement  about the album’s June release – the last time we got new material from these guys was back in 2010 with Congratulations.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, vocalist Andrew VanWyngarden explained that the single is “about that feeling when a parasitic alien is in your head, controlling things.” We’ll take his word for it.

The Download:

It’s been a few years since “Time to Pretend” and “Kids” landed in the ranks of teenage anthem-dom. But MGMT proves that they’re still a band that we should feel excited about with “Alien Days.”

The band does a damned good job of making everyone feel welcome — their songs manage to hook whoever’s listening. And it makes sense… founding band members Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Wyngarden formed MGMT as freshmen at Wesleyan University. They weren’t aiming to start a globally-beloved band; they were just trying to make some music that their friends would have fun listening to.

In a lot of ways, MGMT is like the friend that you always want to be at your parties. Their songs might not be emotionally gripping, artistically brilliant pieces — but they’re a ton of fun. More than that, MGMT has an energy that is contagious. It’s hard to not enjoy it when your ears get a taste of their psychedelic rock sound. I think a perfect example of the effect that they have is Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness.” The song takes on a totally different vibe in the version that features MGMT — it becomes more fun, more repeat-worthy.

MGMT comes out in June. The band is also kicking off their Spring Tour on 26 April, so make sure to take a look and see if they’re performing near you. Until then, enjoy “Alien Days” – if this is what it feels like when an alien invades your brain, then I guess I’m okay with it.

Take Action!
