The Snap:

Deerhunter has released a teaser track from their upcoming album, Monomania. The Atlanta-based band is defined by its genre-shifting songs, and this latest addition proves that the group is still bring a unique and compelling sound to the table. Monomania is Deerhunter’s sixth album together; its release is set for 6 May. If this song is getting you excited, give yourself something to look forward to and pre-order it here .

The Download:

Deerhunter has got some serious character. They first got attention with the release of their sophomore album, “Cryptograms,” but since then listeners have had the pleasure of watching them evolve into an awesome and dynamic group.

I didn’t like Deerhunter at first. Their songs felt too ambient and trancey for my taste. While some might think longingly of the days of “White Ink” I am so, so delighted to see them go. Maybe it’s just a personal taste thing — but material like “Monomania” is just much more interesting.

Frontman Bradford Cox clearly thinks that a moment when he is not in costume is a moment wasted (see here, here, here, here, … I could do this all day.) In the band’s live rendition on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” Cox dressed up in a wig and a horrifically bandaged hand, the latter of which apparently is in homage to his father, who recently lost two fingers in an accident.

The elaborately strange outfits make for some entertaining visuals — but to be honest, these guys could be wearing paper bags and I wouldn’t care. They’ve got a good thing going, and I am really excited to see what Monomania holds for us.
