NEW VAMPIRE WEEKEND SONGS. SHOULD YOU BE EXCITED? YES.

The Snap:

Vampire Weekend’s highly anticipated upcoming album Modern Vampires of the City is finally starting to trickle its way out. The two new singles – ‘Step’ and ‘Diane Young’- are the first official glimpses of the future album, which is due out May 7th.

The Download:

Thankfully, the new singles sound somewhat like the same ole’ Vampire Weekend that the world knows and loves. ‘Diane Young’ gets a little strange with the voice effects and definitely has some 1950’s vibes thrown in, which are both new to the band. And while both songs haven’t strayed too far from the sound we’re accustomed to hearing, Vampire Weekend is clearly not afraid to try new things with their music on this album. ‘Step’ is more like the tracks from their previous releases (when compared to ‘Diane Young’), and in my opinion is the better of the pair if you’re looking for the familiar sound.

While the songs may not feature a groundbreaking new style, what they do do (hah!) is show that Vampire Weekend is keeping the traditional style of their previous albums, while adding the occasional experimental spin. One thing that’s clear is that the new album isn’t going to be as ‘beachy’ as the earlier albums, and the new songs sound much more mature and put together.

We also had a small taste of some new material at the end of last year on The Jimmy Kimmel Show, where they played ‘Unbelievers‘, which sounds ridiculously good and I would love to hear a studio version of it. Unfortunately, that may have to wait until May 7th.

So should you be excited for Modern Vampires of the City? Yes. Yes you should.
