The Download:

Phones should be unlocked. The carrier should not be allowed to restrict your ability to move from one provider to another. The mobile operators are in the business of providing connectivity. If they fail, then you as a consumer should be able to take your phone and move to another carrier. The problem is that the mobile providers don’t like that because then they would have to actually be responsible for providing the service they they are selling. So over the past several years they have enacted a series of rules that serve to increase their profits at the expense of the consumers. The main goal of all of these rules is to eliminate competition between telcos. Locking phones is one of these rules because it dramatically increases the costs of switching companies. Improve competition and service by making phones and phone number portable.
