THE XX IS GROWING UP

THE XX IS GROWING UP

The Snap:

Since releasing Coexist last September, The xx has been a prominent fixture in the global music scene – every week, it feels like they are bringing something new to the table.

If your Valentine’s Day blush is still going strong, here’s a musical tidbit that will keep it going for another few hours. While on tour in Texas, The xx released a cover of “I Miss You” to “honor a fellow Texan” (Beyonce hails from the state – you can listen to the original version here).

In addition, The xx enigmatically announced Night and Day, an event curated by the band. It’s unique projects like this that solidifies The xx as a group worth following — and tracks their growth from a tempestuous teenage band to one that is all grown up.

The Download:

Okay, I think it’s clear that I am a sucker for a good old-fashioned shocking cover (Anya Marina’s “http://thesnapdownload.com/2013/02/10/5-cover-songs-that-dont-suck/”? Jenny Owen Youngs’ “Hot in Herre”? Jamie Cullum’s “Don’t Stop the Music”? SIGN ME UP.)

But I decided to write about this today because I think The xx’s version of “I Miss You” does a beautiful job of showcasing how unique, versatile, and delightfully surprising this group is. They are always bringing something new to the table — and all too often that can feel like a rarity in the music industry (I will save that spiel for another day).

The xx released Coexist last September. The band came to be when its founders, Oliver Slim and Romy Madley-Croft, were just 15 — and this most recent album shows how much they’ve grown up. The xx has moved beyond the years of teenage angst to tackle broader (and, I think, better) territory. It’s an awesome thing to see.

The upcoming Night and Day feels like physical proof of the band’s growth — and vision. Read the event’s description and try to not to feel excited about it:

“We searched high and low for unique and beautiful locations to stage these shows and picked the artists that we most respect and admire to join us. The events will run from early afternoon, with some of our favourite music (and food) to take you from day into night.”

Whether it’s reinventing hip-hop songs or hosting a concert in an abandoned theme park, The xx always has something going on – and you’ll want to make sure you’re in the know.

Other AWESOME news: Last week, The xx announced that they are about to make fans very happy by touring with Grizzly Bear for the next few months. You can check out their schedule (and start planning) here.
