COMMENT ON A TWEET #11: HECKLING AT A PUBLIC FORUM

The Snap:

Tweet: “@andersoncooper: Why was the father of a #SandyHook victim shouted down during a public hearing? Details @AC360 8p,10p”

The Download:

I did not get to watch the AC360 report. I did read an account of the incident here. This is a difficult issue. The gun debate is very heated. Passions are running high on both sides and you can expect there will be aggressive push back at public hearings on the topic. We saw this at the ACA town hall meetings and at events leading up to the Iraq war. Controversial topics bring out heated push back. The people who testify should expect to be heckled. But it is hard to justify heckling the father of a child shot in at Newtown. But it is also hard to justify the father using his situation to make a political point while expecting no push back. In the final analysis, he should have been allowed to speak, the crowd should have been able heckle, but no louder than they would have heckled anyone else.
