I have had a problem with the way that the media covers political events for a while. I documented this in the post “The 24 Hour News Cycle Has Killed The News.” This is another example of the media doing the wrong things. We spend so much time on trivial crap like this that the major stuff gets ignored. I suspect that the reason for this is twofold. The first part is that the news consumer is not really interested in knowing about the details. They want their news pre-digested for them, so they tune into news channels that tell them what to think about issues based on their political affiliations – Fox News for the GOP and MSNBC for the Democrats. This leads to the second reason. The news used to be seen more as a public service. It was understood that news was a money-losing endeavor. That all changed with CNN, which demonstrated that you could make money with news. So the focus shifted from reporting to ratings. From journalism to cost cutting. The results have been the focus on events that can be easily covered, like did Beyonce lip sync at the expense of investigative journalism into pressing global and national matters.
