OMG WE ARE FAT

OMG WE ARE FAT

The Snap:

I have been back in the U.S. for a few weeks now and have come to a realization. My god we are fat. This not limited to either gender, race or age.

The Download:

The number of obese people that I have seen in the last week is huge. 35% of Americans are obese. 33% of Americans are overweight but not obese. That puts the total at almost 7 out of 10 people who need to drop weight. These numbers are causing many of the health problems and costs that we currently face. Even the U.S. military is having problems recruiting because of this situation. However, I am skeptical that Americans will reverse this trend, based on the failures that I witness every January at the gym. It is easy to point the finger, as I have done, at the overweight. It is also not entirely accurate. Americans are losing the weight battle, but the game is fixed against them. It is fixed by a food industry that is dedicated to increasing your caloric intake.

If you go out to dinner in another country, you will get a reasonable amount of food. In the U.S. you will get an insane amount of food. For example, I recently had someone bring over a few slices of pizza. Two slices of American pizza are larger than an entire pie in Singapore. If my wife and I went out for pizza, we would likely split one of these slices. We then went out for American Chinese (real Chinese food is significantly different from what is served here). The amount of food was way too much and was way too sweet. We would have been fine splitting a single dinner. We were out to lunch recently while looking at cars and saw someone order waffles for “breakfast.” The waffles came with three scoops of ice cream and whipped cream. On waffles! Until we are willing as a country to rethink our relationship with food, then we will continue to face all of these problems.
