The Snap:

2013 is creeping up quickly, and I can’t wait to get into the New Year. There is a seriously good line-up of bands pushing out albums next year. January alone features should-be-great releases from Foxygen, Local Natives, Yo La Tengo, and Toro Y Moi. And now that the anticipation of the world ending has come and gone, 2012 can go to hell.

The Download:

There’s a ton of music set to come out in early 2013, and if you’re like me (poor), you should probably start saving now because there’s plenty to buy. Foxygen is releasing their new album “We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic”, which should be savored like a complex wine if it’s anything like their previous offering. Local Natives are also releasing ‘Hummingbird’, which – other than being my own most anticipated album of the year – already sounds ridiculously good from the singles they’ve released, and should be a must-buy on everyone’s list. Ending the month with an odd American-bands-with-foreign-names section, Yo La Tengo will set their new album “Fade” into the world, while Toro Y Moi will follow with “Anything in Return” a week later.

Other popular bands – such as Arcade Fire, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, Cloud Nothings and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s  – are on schedule to put out new albums as well, but don’t currently have official dates or titles, and are most likely planned for the latter half of the year.

One last band that I’m extremely excited for is Sun Kil Moon, whose first album “Among the Leaves” was one of my favorites of 2012. I mean, seriously, have you heard “That Bird Has a Broken Wing”? Shit’s amazing. The new album “Perils of the Sea” will be a bit different, though, since it’s actually a collaboration with ‘The Album Leaf’, so you get the vocals of Sun Kil Moon on top of melodies that are not common to the band. A pretty kickass collab, if you ask me. It should be out in the spring.

It seems impossible that 2013 won’t have as many great albums as 2012 did, and word on the street is that we might even get a a little something from Beck (sheet music… or something?). Let’s hope for the best.
