ON AN ON: SCATTERED TREES’ SECOND SHOT AT MAKING GOOD MUSIC

The Snap:

On 29 January, On An On will unveil their debut album, Give In Out. In the meantime, they have offered us the tantalizing single, Ghosts, to whet our appetite.

On An On is an offshoot from Scattered Trees, the indie band that broke up earleir this year. Alissa Eiesland, Nate Eiesland, and Ryne Estwing joined forces to create the new project – and “Ghost” is the perfect sampling of what they have to offer.

The Download:

Let me start with a disclaimer: I didn’t love Scattered Trees. I always felt like they were a little too angsty, and trying a little too hard (this video, anyone?). So I had a feeling that On An On might rub me the same way.

Thus far, I really like what I see/hear from these guys. Their single has this awesome blend of trance and indie, like Fleet Foxes and M83 mated to create “Ghosts.” I was particularly drawn to the lulling quality that sneaks into the song… It almost feels like a grownup lullaby. Make sure that you check out the video, too: despite being completely psychedelic and possibly nonsensical, it has the same quietly captivating vibe that makes the song so excellent.

On An On also released another single, The Hunter, in late November. It is worth a listen as well – (though I’m not sure how I feel about the synth-overload). You can listen to it here. “The Hunter” sounds completely different from “Ghosts,” which perhaps points to an album that is full of variety. I’m not sure whether this is a good or a bad thing – but I will definitely be buying Give in Out to find out.
