The Snap:

A while ago I wrote about choices under a post called “Mind Your Own Fucking Business.” The reason I wrote the post was because I wanted to do something interesting in 2013. I have left my job because I was not a fit for the company. Actually, I am not really a big company person. If you want to know why, please read “Corporate Cultures Are Fucked Up,” Stress And Work Life Balance,” and “Add Value By Doing Nothing.” The problem is that despite an individual’s desire, society will not allow you to step outside of the norm.

I want to take 2013 off to hike the Appalachian Trail. I am in my early 40’s and now seems like a perfect time to do it. We are very financially secure as a result of a combination of prudent savings and family money. Further, the jobs that I have had have been very taxing for the last 10 years. Tons of travel, tons of pressure, and long hours. So honestly, I wanted to take some down time.

The problem is that this is not considered normal, as I have been frequently reminded by a variety of people. Apparently it is critical to others that I have a job. The fact that I don’t need one is irrelevant. But since I am stubborn, I have decided that I am going to continue to fight this attitude. While I can not convince everyone, I can convince most, and all of the people I care about. So for the people who can not understand this, or can not accept it, fuck you. I really don’t care what you think.
